what is a feathered dragon, you may ask? 'Feathered Dragon' is a term of endearment that we use to refer to the Lovebird. Those of you out there who own these feisty little guys will find the term quite an appropriate one. Not that they can't be totally snuggly sweet-hearts; it's just that these cute guys sometimes breathe a little fire. Lovebirds are entertaining, energetic, curious and engaging. I feel they are really under-rated parrots, too often overlooked as common and uninteresting.

Lovebirds make great pets. They are very acrobatic, active clowns. They need lots of toys to keep them busy and a big cage. In our opinion, a lovebird should be kept in no smaller a cage than 18"x18"x24". That's what your typical pet store sells as a 'cockatiel' cage. Bar spacing should be no greater than 1/2", and doors and food cup holders should have secure fasteners: lovebirds are clever little things, and will escape when you least expect it! Daily interaction and out of cage time is a must for these little guys, if you want them to be happy and stay sweet and tame.

Mom and  Dad (Stitch and Sauce) as young'uns.

There are nine different species of Lovebirds, all natives of Africa. Peach Faced Lovebirds are the largest of the nine species, weighing in at 50-60 grams. They are also the most commonly kept species, and arguably, the most prolific! They are called 'peach faced' for good reason; the wild-type colouring includes a deep peach/salmon colour on the forehead, face and bib. The body is generally a deep green with dark blue rump and dark grey primaries. Peach faced lovebirds don't have the white eye ring so obvious in some other lovebird species. THE PEACH FACED LOVEBIRDS WE BREED HERE DON'T HAVE PEACH FACES; THEY ARE A COLOUR VARIETY KNOWN AS 'SEAGREEN'. MANY OF MY BABIES ARE ALSO PIEDS, MEANING THEY HAVE VARIED PATCHES OF YELLOW THROUGHOUT THEIR BODIES.

Sauce, guarding his territory. Wanna ask him to 'step up'??

Kids and peach faced lovebirds can be wonderful companions for one another. My own children play with our lovebirds all the time. That lovebird beak can pack quite a pinch though, so always supervise children, for the safety of child and bird!

Check the nursery pages for info on available babies, or e-mail us to find out more. We're always more than happy to talk about our beautiful babies or to send out pics!
